The violin is held between the chin and shoulder, and the left hand presses the strings while the right-hand moves a bow back and forth to produce a sound. The sound of a violin can be very emotive and captivating, and many consider it to be one of the most beautiful instruments in the world.
The violin is composed of a body, a neck and strings, with the body usually being made of spruce, maple or other woods. The strings are usually made of steel, or sometimes of stranded gut or synthetic material. The bow is usually made of a stick of wood, usually of pernambuco, with horsehair stretched across the strings. The fingerboard is usually made of ebony and fitted with four tuning pegs.
